I first modelled and cast into bronze when working with friends Julia and Shane Stratton in Philadelphia for 3 months between 2007 and 2008. It was an opportunity to work figuratively and on a larger scalke in a new medium, bronze.
It was very liberating to model in wax after working for so long directly by chasing and constructing in silver or carving patterns for casting in wood. It was also exciting to work alongside knowledgeable friends who know everything there is to know about sculpture and bronze foundry. Beginning wih small figures for assembly into groups I then made a larger hollow figure 24 " tall by 38" from wing tip to wing tip which is adjustable at the hips, assembled in 7 sections I made 5 alternate heads for it.
On returning home in March 2008 I used the idea of the winged figures on a pair of chased silver wine coolers for the Birmingham Jewellery and Giftware Federation. Details of these are shown here.
I took the idea of working with adjustable, 'doll like' figures further when working at the Kohler iron foundry between October and Christmas 2008.
