Drawing was Wally’s entry point to the Arts and initially used as a tool for 'looking' and perception of the visual world. Drawing remains integral in the design and presentation of all of his work .
I am fascinated by the independance of the 2 dimensional world with its capacity for paradox and ambiguity, something which is barred to the three dimensional world in which objects have to take their place alongside others.
Multi tasking for the self employed is unavoidable but I cannot draw and work in metal in parallel. It has to be either one to the excusion of the other for a period of weeks, if possible. For this reason I am looking forward to a residency in South Africa in which there are printmaking but no metal working facilities and I hope to do a lot of drawing.
I am apprehensive as always at the prospect of the residency as of any other task in case I fail to 'come up ' with anything when there, the possibilty that ideas or technique may fail me.
Designing tends to make me feel as if I am in a windowless room with nothing but a table and chair and attempting to materialise an object from thin air. I am always surprised at the results, that there are any results.
